Grand Canyon National Park Features:• Walk part of the South Rim Trail • Explore even a small section of the inner canyon • Enjoy the views of the canyon and the Painted Desert from the Watchtower • Head for flightseeing trip above the canyon • Boat the Colorado River Arizona's Grand Canyon will impress you no matter how many photographs you've seen or panoramic sceneries you've imagined. The river swells with the rain, the cliffs change color by the hour, and the wildlife changes with the seasons. The canyon in the daylight may appear as a series of wheat-colored pinnacles and ridges striated with pink and purple; at sundown, the retreating light ripples across the rock layers of deepening rose, magenta, and rust until the ridgeline fades to a thin, moonlit silhouette. It stretches for more than 277 miles, ranges to ten miles in width, and has a depth of about one mile. That is the definition of grand. If you are not adventuresome that does not mean that visiting the Grand Canyon is not for you. Of course you may make the 15.8-mile, two-day hike from the South Rim's Bright Angel Trail to the Colorado River and back up again (wonderful as that is for athletic teens and adults). But the best experience is just in taking time to linger and look, something that kids do very well. The majority of guests start at the South Rim, though the harder-to-reach North Rim (open mid-May to mid-October) has equally impressive sceneries and many fewer visitors. If you want to enjoy striking views on the South Rim, especially with little ones too young to head for the inner canyon, walk part of the flat, mostly paved Rim Trail. Another good option is a section of the three-mile stretch between Yavapai Observation Point to Maricopa Point. One of the main attractions in the Desert View area, east of the main village, is the Watchtower, a 70-foot-tall stone tower with magnificent panoramic sceneries of the canyon, the Painted Desert, and the river far below. Tusayan Ruin is the remains of an Anasazi Indian village constructed around 1185 A.D. There is a small museum displaying artifacts. Other picturesque places are Moran Point and Grandview Point, with landscapes to Navajo Mountain, Utah, and Yaki Point, particularly dramatic at sundown. If you head for a hiking tour in the inner canyon, even for a short while, gifts you with close-up views of the canyon's millennia of rock layers. Many families go for the Rest House, 1.5 miles from the trailhead along the popular Bright Angel Trail. While walking you may explore fossils of corals, sharks, and sponges, testaments to the fact that this region—at an altitude of over 7,000 feet—was once underwater. A great choice is the South Kaibab Trail. You’ll walk by a geological timeline punctuated by layers of Kaibab limestone, Tarroweap formation, Coconino sanstone, and Hermit shale. You may go for flightseeing tour by plane or helicopter, mule trip, or raft trip makes for an memorable way to experience the canyon in all its awe-inspiring splendor.
